Great client - extensive program. She entertained people from around the world so she needed protected spaces outside but not enclosed (but they couldn't block the view from inside), outside but screened, inside but not conditioned and inside conditioned (it is Iowa after all). She wanted the porch to address the yard because as it existed it was arbitrary. She wanted the yard to invite you into it and have focal points to enjoy while sitting on the porch. we created a path that told visitors where to go when no one answered the front door. She wanted the yard private so we added a trellis to the top of the fence to grow flowering vines on as well as planting some white pines and ornamental trees. Tried blueberries but I couldn't convince her how much rabbits like to eat the bushes. We played with the water coming off the roof a lot - rain chains, splash blocks, bird baths, waterfalls and sculptures.

The adiculae actually proved a bit too successful; it was so powerful everyone wanted to be under it.

Looking out from the porch.

A composed outdoor space for all manner of gatherings.

Before - not very inspiring.

Plow disks as edging means she could run the mower over them and not have to trim.
